In a historic move toward bolstering India’s aerospace capabilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently inaugurated India’s first private military aircraft production plant, the TATA Aircraft Complex, in Vadodara. The facility, a collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus, is set to manufacture the C295 military transport aircraft—a versatile machine equipped for both troop and logistical transport to remote and rugged locations.

A Landmark for India-Spain Relations
The ceremony in Vadodara marked the first visit by a Spanish Prime Minister to India in nearly two decades. PM Sanchez expressed enthusiasm about the venture, noting it as a milestone in India-Spain industrial collaboration. He described the project as a testament to India’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ initiative, which aims to turn India into an industrial powerhouse and attract foreign investment. For the aerospace industry, the facility’s opening signals a promising new chapter of collaboration and industrial growth, drawing the attention of European companies toward Indian soil.

From Vision to Reality
PM Modi emphasized the speed and efficiency of the project’s execution, pointing out that construction began in 2022 and is already operational. He dedicated this achievement to the late Ratan Tata, envisioning his joy in seeing Tata’s role in advancing India’s defense manufacturing capabilities.

The C295 aircraft, set to replace India’s legacy Avro-748 fleet, is renowned for its versatility. With the capacity to transport up to 71 troops or 50 paratroopers, the C295 is designed to navigate challenging terrains that heavier aircraft cannot access. Airbus will deliver the first 16 aircraft from its facility in Seville, Spain, in fly-away condition, while the remaining 40 will be built and assembled in Vadodara, marking a significant leap in India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities.
A Boost to the Local and Global Aerospace Sector
Vadodara has officially entered the global aerospace scene with the TATA Aircraft Complex, and the inauguration couldn’t have come at a better time. The facility has the potential to open doors to greater European-Indian industrial cooperation, enhancing India's defense capabilities and expanding Spain’s footprint in Asia.

Strengthening India’s Global Ties
Following the inauguration, PM Modi and PM Sanchez held delegation-level talks, touching on the longstanding friendship between India and Spain. In the coming days, Sanchez will address the Spain India Forum in Mumbai, meeting with leaders from various industries, including film, tech, and trade, aiming to strengthen cultural and business ties between the two nations.
Vadodara has witnessed a new milestone, paving the way for India’s aerospace dreams to take flight.
